The e-Shram card provides unorganised workers in India access to various social security and welfare schemes, financial support, and employment opportunities. The primary benefits include:

Key Benefits
  • Accidental Insurance Coverage: Registered workers receive an accidental insurance cover of ₹2 Lakhs under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY). In case of accidental death or permanent disability, the beneficiary gets ₹2 lakhs, and ₹1 lakh for partial disability.
  • Access to Social Security Schemes: The e-Shram portal serves as a one-stop platform for unorganised workers to access and enroll in various Central and State government social welfare schemes, such as Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Atal Pension Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • Pension Scheme Integration: The card is integrated with the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) pension scheme. Eligible workers (aged 18-40) can enroll to receive a minimum assured monthly pension of ₹3,000 after attaining the age of 60 years.
  • Portability of Benefits: The system ensures the portability of social security and welfare benefits, which is especially helpful for migrant and construction workers who move across regions for work.
  • Financial Assistance during Crises: The centralised database can be used by the government to provide necessary financial assistance and support to eligible workers during national crises or pandemics (e.g., COVID-19).
  • Job Opportunities and Skill Development: The e-Shram portal is integrated with the National Career Service (NCS) and Skill India Digital portals, allowing workers to search for suitable job opportunities and access skill enhancement and apprenticeship programs.
  • Unique Identity (UAN): Upon registration, workers receive a universal, 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) e-Shram card, valid across the entire country, which acts as a portable proof of their unorganised worker status
  • Targeted Policy Making: The comprehensive national database helps the government in the effective implementation of existing schemes and in formulating new policies and creating future job opportunities for the unorganised sector.
